Tuesday Tidbit: How do I Help My Child Learn New Words?! BE A BROKEN RECORD!!!
Authored By: Elise Weinstein, M.S., CCC-SLP, Speech Therapist at The Village Therapy Place
Are you thinking…how can I help my child learn new words quicker? How long will it take for him to learn this new word?
Try sounding like a broken record 😉
It’s more than repeating the word multiple times (though sometimes that helps too- ex. tickle tickle tickle!); try using the target vocabulary word multiple times in different sentences during the same conversation.
Example: Hot
Ooh, your food is hot, let’s blow on it. Is it still hot? A little hot. Let’s blow on it again. Oh good, it’s not hot anymore. Feel it- not hot!
Notice how we didn’t say “cool” once as the target was hot.
Example: Tall
Wow, your tower is tall. How tall can we make it? I added a block, now look how tall it is. So tall! You are tall, too. Stand up…see you are tall and your tower is tall! Yes, Mommy is tall too!
Though you may tire of saying the same word over and over (and over and over) again, this repetition will help your child understand new words more quickly. So…happy repeating!
Inspire other parents by sharing a time when you felt it was easy to incorporate this strategy (or a time when you felt silly talking so much 🤦♀️but did it anyway to help your child 🙌).
